Peel Ports in Great Yarmouth has been selected by Galloper Wind Farm Ltd as the assembly base for its offshore wind farm project off the coast of Suffolk, a news report has been able to suggest.

Siemens’ will use the port to supply 56 six-megawatt turbines for the Galloper Wind Farm, an extension to the existing Greater Gabbard Wind Farm.

A multi-million pound co-investment in port infrastructure has been agreed to support the construction of primary infrastructure and groundworks, including the delivery of yard storage and marshalling, as well as the installation of heavy lift quay facilities.Key components such as nacelles, blades, towers and electrical modules will arrive at Great Yarmouth via the port, where they will be preassembled quayside before going offshore.

Enabling work will begin immediately and Siemens is anticipated to be on site in spring next year.

Richard Goffin, port director at Peel Ports Great Yarmouth, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Galloper Wind Farm team to deliver this important offshore windfarm project through a co-investment in the Port estate.

“The enabling works are in the detailed design phase and are planned to develop out 30% of the available land within the Outer Harbour. Construction will commence this summer.

“This project will accelerate planned infrastructure improvements to Peel Ports Great Yarmouth and will benefit future wind farm developments and the wider energy sector for many years to come.”

  2. Global access control solutions market is expected to reach over USD 24.68 billion by 2020

The global access control solutions market is expected to reach over USD 24.68 billion by 2020, a recent research report by Technavio has been able to suggest.

The paper, ‘Global Access Control Solutions Market 2016-2020’, points out that, in 2015, biometric access control accounted for a share of 50.87% of the global access control market, and it will reach 57.56% by 2020. Furthermore, in 2015, smartcards accounted for a share of 49.13% of the global access control market, and it will reach 42.44% by 2020. Smartcards are increasing adopted in the BFSI, government, and transportation sectors to improve security. The increase in the number of fraudulent activities and terrorist activities has compelled organizations to implement the use of smartcards to provide authorized access to employees on secured premises.

The research report also found that, in 2015, the global contactless card-based access control market was valued at close to USD 651.3 million. The rate of adoption of contactless card-based access control is increasing in government organizations with the growing need for security. Contactless smartcards use radio frequency (RF) technology for communication between a contactless smartcard and the card reader. Thus, for data and information transfer between contactless smartcards and card readers, it is important for contactless smartcards to be in proximity to an antenna.

“A rise in the number of online transactions is leading to an increase in the cases of identity theft, data theft, card-related fraud, and insurance claim fraud. These factors drive the demand for access control in this sector. As a result of the continuous advances in technology, the BFSI sector is shifting to the adoption of access control to strengthen its antifraud strategies,” said Amrita Choudhury, one of Technavio’s lead analysts for automatic identification systems.

“Many large financial institutions are replacing outdated solutions and are investing heavily in access control to reform their workflows and reduce financial fraud. Access control such as smartcards and biometrics protect against security threats that range from misuse of user passwords to sophisticated system hacks. The cost of managing password resets for banking enterprises is very high, making access control a cost-effective solution,” added Amrita.

An US naval base has decided to implement a biometric identification and access control system at all its gates and entry points in a bid to ensure a superior level of security, a news report has found.

Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) will implement a secure identity authentication and force protection system that features a global database which effectively facilitates the distribution of biometric data to the gate-guard tasked with controlling an individual’s authorized access to SUBASE.

Using a hand-held wireless scanner, the gate-guard scans the ID card’s barcode and/or the individual’s fingerprints to instantly identify the individual and whether or not the individual has authorized access to the base.

The system also alerts guards when an ID card is lost or stolen, flags individuals banned from the base, identifies fake cards, and taps into criminal databases to check if the individual has had any past criminal charges.

  10. Updating one’s Access Control System Causes Little Disruption, Security Industry Believes

Although upgrading a company’s access control system might seem a daunting task that’s likely to bring about significant disruptions to daily operations, the consensus across the security industry is that such a process is either ‘somewhat disruptive’ or brings ‘very little disruption’, a recent report has been able to suggest.

The “Access Control Report 2016: Legacy Infrastructure and Motivations for Upgrading” IFSEC Global survey, published in partnership with HID Global, explains how opinions were mixed as to whether upgrading their access-control solution would be disruptive to daily business or not, with a majority anticipating that it would be ‘somewhat disruptive’, 31% saying there would be ‘very little disruption’ (31%) and just 16% opting for ‘very disruptive’.

One respondent said they had found upgrading “somewhat disruptive to business activities” but indicated that it was worth the short-term inconvenience as it boosted “efficiency”.

“Access control upgrades can be managed with minimal disruption if a phased approach is considered and installation times are scheduled when a site is used less.”, the report’s authors believe.

“ In addition, multi-technology readers and cards can make the upgrade path easy and non-disruptive for a business. On-site administrator training is required to operate the new head-end software (in case this part of the system is upgraded)” they added.
