Prison visitor badge is simply swiped to verify ID

A criminal is at large after going missing from an open prison in Monmouthshire on Saturday. A burglar convicted at the end of last year, Lee David Pearson absconded from HMP Prescoed in Wales. Gwent Police have advised the public not to approach him. The latest incident involving a prisoner from Prescoed follows a convicted murderer absconding last month before he was recaptured two days later.
Due to the increasing demand for bundled ID card systems, Access Control UK have put together an option for the prison service. Details such as a digital photograph are printed onto an ID card for prison visitors. At control points operated by an HM Prison Service officer, the visitor’s ID badge is simply swiped, and a high quality digital photograph of the visitor appears on-screen, allowing instant verification of identity. Accurate records of any visitors to the prison are stored within the monitoring software. An off-duty teenage special constable who was knocked unconscious during a night time incident has spoken of his ordeal. Simon Rooke intervened to break up a fight in Wolverhampton, and said: “I didn’t show them my badge but I told them to leave him alone. They started to walk off and I turned my back on them to look at the guy on the ground. Somebody then shouted something and I turned around and he punched me in the face. The force knocked me off my feet and I hit my head off the kerb and it knocked me unconscious.” CCTV footage of his alleged attackers was released.
A national organisation has called for more measures to tackle business-related crime. “The true extent of business crime is not reflected in official figures as many firms have effectively opted out of the criminal justice system,” said Federation of Small Businesses spokesman Russell Lawson, continuing: “Businesses also state that one of the barriers to reporting crime is that the process is too time consuming. There is a perception among business owners that the UK is experiencing a crime epidemic and that no one cares.”
A building site conflagration that threatened properties in the area over a weekend involved retirement flats, the fire service believed. Crews said the Basingstoke building, 100 metres (328ft) by 200 (656ft), was well alight when they arrived. Burning wooden embers from the building and the prevailing wind conditions put a number of other surrounding properties at risk, including a nearby community college. Police said some residents had been able to return home on the Saturday afternoon, after spending the night sheltering in a rest centre.
The fire brigade had to attend a badly-damaged West Country public toilet following reports of an explosion. Crews from Avon Fire and Rescue Service and police officers rushed to the car park facility in Weston-super-Mare, but luckily there was no blaze. The police are now investigating the incident at the popular holiday resort.
A business organisation is urging firms to liaise with their local police authority in order to fight crime. “Many small businesses are run by members of the local community so it is important that those communities and small businesses themselves have confidence that the police are willing to act when crimes are reported,” stated the Federation of Small Businesses. “We would encourage any small business to work with their local police authority if they feel they are not getting the policing service they deserve.” 
County Durham police force has reduced crime despite increasing doubts over its future as a separate entity. Chief Constable Jon Stoddart said: “These excellent results are putting us on course to far exceed our targets for reducing crime and increasing detections. But we’re not being complacent – we’re aiming to make our communities even safer by keeping up the pressure on offenders and challenging anti-social behaviour.” There have also been fewer victims of house burglary, with offences down to 585 offences compared to 779 last year.
Police investigating a robbery at a bookmaker in Sunderland have released 
Police were staggered to find £½m hidden in a toilet in chalet owned by a convicted criminal. The money was later confiscated after police produced evidence it came from drugs profits. The investigation linked Peter Wells with the chalet in Allhallows, Kent after his car was involved in a stop-and-search. Wells told officers he had won £100,000 on the Lottery, but failed to give a reasonable explanation for the rest. Wells stood trial at Maidstone Crown Court charged with money laundering, where it was revealed he was involved in a drugs supply network.
Hampshire Constabulary has had to shed nearly a quarter of its workforce in order to make ends meet, and the force has restructured amid fears that it will not be able perform as effectively as before. John Apter, chairman of Hampshire Police Federation, said the workforce "have known for several weeks things look very bleak for the future". He added: "We have been saying that the dark days of policing will come and I am afraid that they have arrived. These cuts will have a massive impact on policing, especially on visibility."
