Increased thefts from church roofs of lead and other metals are “vexatious, morale sapping and costly" according to church leaders. In one diocese alone during 2007/8 more than 150 insurance claims were lodged and £550,000 paid out. A spokesman for the Church of England said: “Church of England congregations are custodians of many of the most significant buildings in the communities they serve,” adding: "Any repair is vexatious, time consuming, morale sapping and costly."A way of avoiding insurance claims for theft at your business premises is to install an Access Control UK system. The number of crimes fell by 3 per cent last year compared with 2009, says the British Crime Survey (BCS). The number of crimes recorded by police also fell 6%. The number of burglaries rose by 14%, the BCS figures showed, however. The largest falls in crime recorded by the police were for criminal damage and offences against vehicles, down 17% and 12% respectively.
By looking at a website list, visitors can see which cafes and supermarkets are continuing to let people use their toilets for free. Participating venues are listed at sutton.gov.uk/toilets as a council response to shoppers’ wishes. A statement by Richmond Council said it is committed to efficiency in all its spending, and added: “by working with local businesses we have responded to residents’ requests for more public toilets, while avoiding the need to build and maintain expensive new council-owned toilets.”
A senior police officer has urged people not to give thieves a chance now we are in summer time. British Summertime officially started when the clocks went back a fortnight ago. Unfortunately in the warmer weather it is tempting to leave doors and windows open – thus attracting opportunist criminals, says Cumbria’s Assistant Chief Constable Jerry Graham. He said: “We are urging people to be vigilant and secure their property, which will help prevent them from becoming a victim of crime.”
A council organisation says crime will rise and youth will suffer following Government cuts. Harrow Council says repercussions will be felt after around £150,000 was stripped out of its Youth Offending Team (YOT). The authority explained the YOT works with young people at risk of offending to try and steer them away from crime, and works with around 300 10 to 18 year olds a year. The council had previously planned cuts of £94,000 to members of staff at the YOT.
Police have refused to rule out a march similar to demonstrations in 2008 in a protest at pay cuts. A spokesperson said the Police Federation, which represents 140,000 rank and file officers, was keeping its options open. No decision will be taken until after Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has reported to the Police Negotiating Board. On April 14 Miss May is due to disclose which recommendations from the report she wishes to endorse.
Business leaders have become partners with police to tackle crime, including literally going back to the drawing board. The Midlands scheme began in 2002 and originally saw firms work together to improve security on industrial estates targeted by criminals. They have since extended to advising on how crime can be designed out of business premises when buildings are on the drawing board. It recognises that the average business loses £5,000 a year to crimes including simple thefts through to complicated fraud.
An estimated £350,000 worth of stolen farm vehicles have been found at a farm in Blackburn. The vehicles have been seized by police and a man was arrested in connection with the thefts after an evening raid by officers. Inspector Ilyas Mohamed said the culprits would be dealt with: “We will robustly deal with people who commit these kinds of offences.” 
British Transport Police are dealing with another spate of thefts on railway lines, and believe it could be the work of a small group. Det Insp Andrea Rainey said: “Thieves target the railway in the mistaken belief that they will make easy money from their criminal behaviour as the price of copper has dramatically increased in recent months.” She added: “This couldn’t be further from the truth, the amount stolen by thieves in individual incidents is worth relatively little.”
