A man in North East England was caught by an undercover officer writing offensive graffiti in a railway toilet. Paul Ramsey, prosecuting at Calderdale Magistrates’ Court, said of the officer: “He sat on a bench watching all men who were going in. A minute later (James) Allen was seen to leave his bike on the platform. The defendant exited two minutes later with what was believed to be a white marker pen in his right jeans pocket.” He was then arrested.

A gang who conducted an armed raid on a supermarket have been jailed, with two of them given minimum terms of more than seven years. Preston Crown Court heard how 48-year-old Mark Cain brandished a gun at the supermarket in Preston in March 2010. Cain and his accomplice, Craig Bulger (51) were both given indeterminate sentences with a minimum of seven years. Another member of the gang not connected to the raid was jailed for six years.
Officers from the Environment Agency joined police in checking depots and other locations across the north of England which may have been carrying stolen scrap metal. Phase one of the operation started during the traditional time for police raids – early morning – with stop and search checks on vehicles in Barrow-in-Furness. During a two-hour period, 36 vans, lorries and cars were stopped by officers in an operation that was part of National Scrap Metal Day.
The current warm, dry spell is causing a lot of fires to break out and spread. Police are currently trying to trace two youths following a spate of fires in a suburb of Aberdeen. Two cars and a shed were damaged and attempts were also made to set fire to a bus, although the driver of the vehicle prevented this incident occurring.
Even though figures show a seventh successive annual decrease in overall crime on the UK’s railways, cable theft has increased by more than 66 per cent, says British Transport Police (BTP). "We know that during difficult economic times acquisitive crime is likely to increase, and these figures show that," said BTP in a statement. "Metal theft causes significant disruption to rail services and that means real consequences for real people – missed business meetings, family celebrations and appointments for instance.”
A church has been left with a £400,000 repair bill following years of lead being stolen from the roof. St John the Divine based in Lancashire holds the grave of General James Scarlett, who led the charge of the Heavy Brigade in the Crimean War. Some of the lead thefts over the past five or six years have been identified and rectified straight away but the problems and damage have stemmed from when it was not apparent the incidents had happened.
A nineteen-year-old has been charged with armed robbery at a service station. Ben David Jones allegedly robbed the Ewloe station in the north of Wales on Bank Holiday Monday. Others have been swiftly arrested by police investigating the robbery but no one else has been charged. Mr Jones is accused of robbing Stephen Oultram at the Ewloe garage of an unknown quantity of money, and possessing a loaded air weapon under the 1968 Firearms Act.
An estate agent said a toilet building being sold was in a "fabulous" location and was confident it would sell easily on the open market. "There’s a lot you can do and properties will always sell for the right price and people will buy anything and to own a little bit of Leicester," said June Polonski from Spencers. She added: “To own something this unusual, I’m sure somebody is going to be very, very creative with it."
Officials said a security breach in 2010 at a jail now known as HMP Isle of Wight, has since been dealt with. A report by the prison’s Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) said the merger of various prisons had impacted on "every aspect" of the establishment. The Prison Service said matters had been addressed and a spokesperson added: "We thank the Independent Monitoring Board at HMP Isle of Wight for their report, which will be fully considered by ministers."
