Town centre and housing areas were hit in a recent spree of anti-social behaviour in mid Wales. Police are looking into the burglary of an old Mace supermarket, when offenders forced entry into the semi-derelict building in Rhayader and removed a copper tank and several lengths of copper piping. This site has been damaged several times in recent weeks with incidents including windows being smashed, but police are treating these as separate matters.

Workers from an industrial estate had to be evacuated to a nearby pub after a huge blaze swept the site on Monday. The estate in Surrey needed to be cleared, as explained by Christine Brooks, a waitress at the Peacock Lodge pub. She said she had heard that some people may be trapped, and added: “There’s been a chemical explosion and the workers from Hobbs Industrial Estate have been evacuated to our pub, some 150 workers.”
Police say a fire at a power sub-station was begun deliberately. Copper conductors and switchgear were also stolen from the station on Merseyside in the early hours of the morning. Merseyside Police are seeking information about who is responsible and Det Con Julie Bolton said: "Someone has also stolen the copper piping from the sub-station and we would appeal for residents who have seen anyone loitering in the area or paying particular attention to the sub-station to call with that information.”
A row has erupted over the removal of a boundary marker which divided flocks. The fence ranges for more than 6.4 kilometres across the Brecon Beacons, through some of the remotest parts of the mountains. It was put up during the foot-and-mouth crisis and campaigners such as ramblers have approved the decision to take it down. The Welsh Government has refused the fence permanent planning permission, but agreement has yet to be reached who will enforce its removal.
A town council is examining its options for better toilet provision, including installing a superloo, hiring portable toilets and building new ones. A spokesman for Bolton Council said: “We have a successful Storeloo scheme in Bolton town centre, which has been in operation for almost 12 months. We are hoping to roll out the scheme to other centres in the borough.” One suggestion is to reopen a toilet block and charge people for its use. 
Ten crews from two counties were this morning (September 9, 2011) tackling a gigantic pallet yard fire. Nearly 50 firefighters dealt with the fire at the site in Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire, from about 02:45 BST. The fire service says about one quarter of the pallets at the site were set on fire in the incident. At one point flames could be seen for miles, and the pile of wood pallets is 300×100 metres.
A new shopping centre which will be a gateway to the new Olympic Park venue will have daily checks because of security fears. Spectators will make their way through the £1.45 billion Westfield shopping project to the Olympic Park during the Games in July, August and September of 2012. Therefore vehicles entering the public car parks will be checked from now on.
Volunteers from the British Red Cross were helping a utility company’s customer relations department to help give practical support to customers without power. The power cut was due to stolen cabling occurring at some time last Saturday, August 27. “Late yesterday afternoon, customers started calling in to report fluctuating levels of volts affecting household appliances,” said UK Power Networks at the weekend. “UK Power Networks will press for the prosecution of anyone caught tampering with its network.”
An unconfirmed number of homes have been affected by a latest round of copper cable theft. Homes in the West Country have had their phones cut off when thieves stole a section of the cable. A spokesperson from British Telecom said a section between Taunton and Yeovil was damaged when people cut through a fibre cable and a smaller copper cable. It required two days of repair from a team of engineers to rectify the problem.
A governmental study gave the reasons why the public felt safer in their community. "By putting over 1,000 additional police on the streets, cutting crime rates to the lowest level since the 1970s and by providing proper support for our young people through Cashback for Communities, we are seeing a marked improvement in neighbourhood safety," concluded the Scottish Household Survey. It was changed in 2005 to include reports of harassment, drug misuse and rowdy behaviour, all of which have dropped.
