An ex-Premiership footballer completed a fall from grace when he was sent to prison this week. While investigating unconnected armed robberies across Lancashire, police discovered Ronnie Wallwork was taking in car parts to be sold onto the black market. The former England under 20 international entered a guilty plea to receiving stolen goods. Judge Simon Newell summed up: “These were high-value items that were stolen. It seems to me they were taken in a professional and sophisticated way.”

Police are asking for information after farm vehicles were stolen from an equestrian school. Tractors were taken from the riding school in West Lothian at the beginning of the week. Officers believe the equipment was driven through a number of wooden and wire fences, causing significant damage. One of the tractors was recovered in a ditch about a mile from the property. The authorities have offered a £1,250 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction over the destruction of parking meters. East Sussex council, Lewes council and Sussex Police have made the offer following the latest events, when six machines were blown up during one weekend in November alone. The fresh wave of incidents began on September 16 when explosives were placed inside a machine. This type of attack has a history at the town of Lewes.
A church has been allowed to install a stainless steel roof in order to thwart criminals. St Nicholas’ Church, in Lincolnshire is one of the first to replace a major section of the roof with the non-traditional material, after it suffered thefts. Father Paul Noble, the vicar at St Nicholas’, said: “We started to think we were foolish in the extreme to think we could put lead back on the church roof when that was the reason for the church being targeted.”
Officers said a large part of a recent ‘sting’ operation which took £68,000 of cash from suspected criminals came as a direct result of information which had been provided by the public since the launch of the Made from Crime? campaign. It is the first scheme of its kind in Scotland. The raids were also a follow up from tip-offs made via Facebook. The operation used Facebook to encourage the public to tell the police if they thought people were making money from crime.
Police say reducing chances of becoming a victim of crime was by “following the crime prevention steps promoted through Operation After Dark." The force warned that criminals start to capitalise on the shorter days. This seasonal crime prevention message in parts of Scotland sees officers patrolling to reinforce the tips they are giving. Their After Dark advice include leaving a light on or setting timer switches to make your property look occupied and less inviting to a prospective thief.
Another scrap yard has been targeted in a raid which police believe will benefit the black market. Thieves got away with metal worth thousands of pounds during a night-time break-in on a yard in Devon. They made off with a tonne of materials from the industrial estate. A police spokesman appealed for information, and added: “This is just the latest in a spate of thefts of metals which is a nationwide phenomena.”
