The British Metal Recycling Association (BMRA), an industry body that deals with 95 percent of Britain’s scrap, said it favoured parliamentary rejection of a bill which proposed a no-cash system for scrap yards. Director general of the BMRA Ian Hetherington said: “If you banned cash today, all the regulated business would obviously obey the law, but people who are selling scrap, they’d sell it to illegal yards,” adding: “We’d rather see a good law even if takes a little more time.”

The Government says it still sees the need for legal changes to combat metal crime after rejecting a bill in Parliament. The proposed legislation received parliamentary support at the time but on Friday was rejected after ministers declared their objection. A government spokesman said it supports the aims of the bill, believing legislation is needed for a sustainable, long-term solution to “the growing menace of metal theft,” adding it had stepped up law enforcement.

During a raid police found stolen property including a JCB digger worth £10,000 at an illegal scrap yard. The yard in Norfolk has now been cleared by police, and its owner Tony Gray, was jailed last year for two years and three months. The illicit operation at the yard netted more than £2 million in illegal earnings. A police spokesman involved in the operation said: 
Officers have praised the bravery of shop staff who fought off an armed attempted thief. Metropolitan Police commented after an attacker described as “well-built” cased out a jewellers, before surprising a female worker and seizing her by the throat. “They acted with great courage to fight off the suspect and were lucky to have avoided being seriously injured. We need help from the public to trace this individual before he attempts to target someone else,” said a detective on the case.
Fire crews were still attending a raging fire a day after it began in a midlands town. The listed building in Northampton was so badly damaged that experts say it is at risk of collapsing. Two bars, the Fat Cats Bar and the Balloon Bar, which are housed in the Grade II listed building, have had to be closed. The area had to be cordoned off and the cause of the fire at the former hotel is under investigation. 
An alleged thief became trapped under a steamroller he was supposedly trying to steal. The man was wedged under the heavy equipment in East Lothian for an hour-and-a-half on Sunday (December 18). In all, three men have been charged with attempted theft in association with the incident. The other two men, aged 26 and 47, are due to appear in court, with the injured man set to join them once he has had treatment.
A family firm has had its meat stock ransacked and children’s presents stolen to complete a miserable Christmas. Richards Family Butchers says it will work around the clock to replace its customers’ orders in time for their Christmas roast. A total of 60 orders’ worth of food was taken in the overnight raid at the Glamorgan site. Police are appealing for witnesses and are warning the public not to buy meat if they do not know where it has come from.
An undercover operation has revealed the extent to which rogue scrap dealers are willing to launder stolen metal. The illicit trade, which is worth an estimated millions of pounds, causes all sorts of knock-on effects when cable is stolen from power or rail lines. An ex-metal thief demonstrated how easy it was to get rid of stolen metal. Known as ‘Jim’, he told BBC London: “There’s never any questions asked at the scrapyard, no identification asked, sign here, do what you like.”
A 20 pence charge for public toilets is one of a series of options being considered by councillors, which also include the possibility of permanently closing toilets other than in selected tourist hotspots. The plans are being mulled over by a cash-strapped district council at cathedral city Chichester, or else it faces up to 13 public conveniences being closed for good.
