A shop owner was confronted by a gang brandishing guns and a knife. The robbery took place at a north-western flower shop, where one of the men was killed by pensioner owner Cecil Coley. Thirty-year-old Gary Mullings was fatally stabbed in the incident in Old Trafford. Mr Coley was arrested on suspicion of his murder, but the Crown Prosecution Service ruled he acted in self-defence. The rest of the gang have been jailed.
Security is a concern at all sizes of business, large or small. Thieves allegedly tried to use two diggers while attempting to rob a store. Police are investigating the matter that one JCB-style vehicle ran out of fuel, forcing the gang to steal another one. The machine used during the incident in Carmarthenshire, which smashed glass and damaged roofing, was taken from a nearby DIY merchant. The digger was pictured outside the supermarket in the aftermath of the raid.

A man was released on bail after holding up the annual boat race. Trenton Oldfield (35) was charged under the Public Order Act following his bizarre act of “protest”. Ahead of the race, he wrote in a blog called “Elitism leads to tyranny” that he wanted to cause “embarrassment and confusion” in a “protest, an act of civil disobedience. I am swimming into the boats in the hope I can stop them from completing the race.”
The ground floor of a Hampshire chapel has been heavily smoke-logged and confirmed to be gutted in the incident. Dorset Fire Service said police were investigating whether someone had deliberately set fire to the building which is in a 19th century cemetery in Weymouth. A Fire Service spokeswoman said the slate roof and the interior of the building were “gutted” in the blaze which took four hours to extinguish. Many World War II graves are situated at the site.

A 28 year-old man was arrested on Tuesday night (March 27) on suspicion of attempted murder, said police. The incident happened in a busy part of the city centre in Cardiff where there was a collision between a taxi and a group of men. One man was sent to hospital with severe burns afterwards. South Wales Police has appealed for witnesses and the area was temporarily cordoned off to traffic while the emergency services were in attendance. 
A fire lit in a nearby wooden equipment shed gutted large areas of a school last November. An 18-year-old pleaded guilty to causing the fire. Andrew Stretton used a lighter to set fire to a cardboard box and the Victorian school at Stirling in central Scotland was so badly damaged that officials decided it had to be demolished. Almost a year-and-a-half after the fire the 160 pupils are still studying in temporary classrooms in an adjacent field.
Rail passengers were told to expect prolonged delays to services today (Tuesday, March 20, 2012) on one part of the network after metal thieves caused signalling problems. Cable theft caused train delays of up to 25 minutes on Arriva Trains Wales. A British Transport Police spokesman said: 
An armed man who tends to wear different types of sports clothing is believed to have robbed at least eight shops. An artist’s impression of the man has been circulated. Kerry Bramley, assistant manager of a betting shop struck by the criminal, said: “You can only see his eyes and a small part of his face, but he’s very distinctive. If I came face-to-face with him again, I’d know him, and all the others who saw him said the same.”
