A report, Policing in Austerity: One Year On, was published on Monday (July 2). It investigated how forces across England and Wales have met the challenge of making the necessary cuts in response. A gang was sentenced for stealing railway material on Monday. The court heard the men abused their positions as railway contractors to steal track and sleepers, and have been jailed for a total of 11 years and 9 months. Network Rail representative Neil Henry said: “The value of the material stolen is wasted money as far as Network Rail is concerned, that’s £1.5m that could otherwise have been spent on passenger facilities invested to improve the railway.”
One of the UK’s longest-serving prisoners has fled from jail in a deeply embarrassing moment for the prison authorities. Serving life for a 1975 pub murder, police say John Massey should not be approached. He was reported missing at 18:30 BST on Wednesday (June 27). Prison sources say the 64-year-old was not spotted in time when making his escape attempt. He already has a record for absconding after he was decategorised and sent to an open jail.
More than 25 shops were affected by a large scale blaze in a precinct. One of the businesses affected in Bury St Edmunds, a lingerie shop, will meet its insurance company later this week. Burglars have given candid interviews about their ‘modus operandi’ for stealing from farms. One burglar interviewed for the study – which is funded by NFU Mutual – said: “If the farmer thinks we’re helping out, we’ll come back. He’ll get to trust us, while all the time we’re looking around to see what’s there.” Some of the criminals added that they use crop picking work from August to October as a cover for their thieving activities.
