A notorious metal thief has been banned from scrap yards across England and Wales. Craig Airnes, of no fixed address, has also been prohibited from handling scrap metal or any metal object more than a kilo in weight, unless he has a receipt. Airnes was arrested and charged with burglary after a break in at a recycling yard last month. The 34-year-old was given a 16-week suspended prison sentence on Monday last week after pleading guilty to burglary in court.

G4S have recently been advertising jobs for ‘civilian investigators’ to help with reduced police numbers in some parts of the country.
A man accused of being involved in a raid said he was 100 miles away. Imran Mostafa, a civil engineering student, told a jury that at the time the robbery at a jewellers in Norfolk took place he was in London. The 20-year-old said he was in fact teaching Arabic and the Koran at a community centre, and told Norwich Crown Court: “I am not a thief. I am not an armed robber.” The hearing continues.
A 21-year-old explained why he was caught brandishing a fake firearm, claiming it was done for a practical joke on a friend. Michael Roughton was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and attend a probation service course. He explained in court after being arrested: “My friend’s dad collects guns from the war and I asked to borrow it from the case. I didn’t know how to operate it.” He added the friends play jokes on each other frequently.
Police have asked farmers, ramblers and those using the countryside to be “vigilant” for suspicious activity after many livestock thefts. Officers are looking into claims that more than 100 sheep have been taken over a five-month period from fields at one estate alone in Aberdeenshire. In three earlier separate incidents, more than 40 ewes and 80 lambs were stolen in the course of a fortnight. Those with information are urged to call police or the confidential Crimestoppers line.
