Parcel delivery giant DPD has been granted permission to build a brand-new £100m parcel hub at Hinckley Commercial Park in Leicestershire, a move that should lead to the creation of no less than 1000 new jobs.

According to a news report on the matter, the company has received permission from the Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to develop its new £100m hub on the 33-acre site, with work being set to start at some point in late August. If everything goes according to plans, the facility is expected to be fully operational by 2015, and should be able to handle 70,000 parcels an hour.

Chief executive Dwain McDonald said: "This is another important step forward for the company and also for the region and our customers. We are a company that is growing fast and investing the proceeds back into our infrastructure to keep on improving our service."

Quite obviously, such an extensive development, will also require the implementation of a very solid access control solution.

This is exactly where Access Control UK will manage to put its expertise to good work, given the fact that we offer an extensive level of experience in designing and delivering reliable, secure and affordable high-spec solutions.

  2. Farr Institute for health informatics research gets £20m in funding

A UK health informatics research institute is set to receive a total of £20m in funding and is expected to attract further solid investments from the pharma and IT industry, a news report revealed.

The Farr Institute will be used to support the safe use of patient and research data for medical research and will also support research which is set to lead to advances in preventative medicines and better development of commercial drugs and diagnostics.

The £20m funding will come from the Medical Research Council and will be used for building four e-health informatics research centres, including the £4.3m Centre for the Improvement of Population Health through e-Records Research (CIPHER) at Swansea University.

Professor Sir John Savill, chief executive of the Medical Research Council, said: “Investment in the Farr Institute represents an important part of a wider MRC strategy to integrate clinical, genetic and other biomedical data to better understand health and disease.”

Given the nature of the research activity set to be carried out within this institute, at least a part of the available funds should go towards the implementation of a highly-secure access control system, and this is exactly where Access Control UK can put its extensive experience to work.

Customers requiring secure installations can fully leverage our T340x fingerprint scanner, capable of easily reading the employees’ fingerprints to verify the identity of the smart card holder, providing total peace of mind.

Additionally, the Access Control UK biometric access control scanners are able to work quite well with most standard types of internal and external electronic, magnetic door releases and devices. They can also be combined with standard smart card scanners, enabling users to mix fingerprint reading and non-fingerprint reading access control scanners on the same security network.

Each attempted access on a scanner is logged within the access control software, allowing you to view and track employees’ movements across your site. Simple to install, each scanner controller can operate over Ethernet or standard network cabling reducing the number of additional wires needed.

  3. Access Control UK relies heavily on smart cards and fobs for seamless operation

Modern clocking and access control systems are a world away from the punch cards and keys of old, with the vast majority relying on fast and reliable smart cards.

This is also exactly the case with the range of access control solutions developed and supplied by Access Control UK, which rely largely on three types of cards/fobs, namely the T1305 Smart Cards, T1313 smart key fobs and T1318 Mifare Smart Cards.

The T1305 Smart Cards have a new white shell type case and a bevelled edge for simple identification, while each card also contains a passive identifier, which holds a unique factory-encoded ID number that cannot be duplicated.

Optional features include magnetic striping, support for adhesive labels, and also availability in a blue version, blue version, primarily designed for the food industry, where most of the equipment and clothing is white.

Next in line comes the T1313 smart key fob, featuring a grey plastic shell, which is made from implant-quality glass similar to those used in the identification of pets. These key fobs have a smaller aerial than that of a standard smart card and therefore also have a smaller read range, but also pack a keyring slot, as well as a copper coil and soft ferrite core.

The T1313 key fob uses the same technology as that of a smart card giving a consistent read range, which can even operate through a thick layer of oil and grease. Key fobs are often implemented by organisations whose employees require a smaller identification device than that of a smart card.

Last, but certainly not least, come the T1318 Mifare Smart Cards, which are regarded as the most widely installed contactless smart card technology in the world. It is the recommended solution if your access control system requires contactless and dual interface smart cards.

Mifare® offer a reliable, low cost alternative to the standard smart card, and provides on-board memory functionality allowing simple integration with other systems and software.

After securing a major contract for supplying to a major supermarket, fruit and vegetable packaging maker T & B Containers has opened a new 15,000 sq ft site at Formal Business Park in Camborne, a news article on this topic reveals.

The company, which is headquartered in Lincolnshire, had previously been based at a small site in Scorrier, but its new business prospects prompted it to look for a larger site with a high ceiling space.

T & B’s South West area manager Andy Doherty said: "The new business represented a 10 per cent increase in our turnover. Finding larger premises was crucial to serving the contract. Our new facility here in Camborne makes it easier to service our existing clients and is a good base to look into expanding into other food markets in the county."

Whenever moving to new, extended premises, any company should seriously consider the implementation of a top-range access control solution, and this is exactly where Access Control UK will manage to put its expertise to good work, given the fact that we offer an extensive level of experience in designing and delivering reliable, secure and affordable high-spec solutions.

  5. Arborfield Garrison redevelopment plans to go before the local council

Plans to establish a village on Arborfield Garrison, a military base soon to be vacated, and adjoining land, will go before the Wokingham Borough Council, a news report reveals.

The Arborfield Garrison Landowners’ Consortium, comprising the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Aegan Trust Company and Robert Kenyon, represented by Leatherhead-based Wates Developments, plans to create no less than 2,000 residential properties, a 43,000 sq ft foodstore, a care home, a district centre, a primary school, a secondary school and general retail, leisure and office facilities.

In a planning statement sent to Wokingham Borough Council, developers explained what has been put forward, saying that: "The vision for Arborfield is to create a welcoming, enterprising and thoughtfully planned 21st century village, where modern working patterns as well as rural leisure pursuits are accommodated and the area’s unique human and natural heritage is valued."

Quite obviously, such a huge undertaking will involve quite a large number of contractors that will require access to the site. And in order to ensure a very good level of security across the possible Arborfield Garrison redevelopment site, Aegan Trust Company and Wates Developments will have to implement a very solid access control solution, such as the ones delivered by AccessControl UK.

This is exactly where Access Control UK will manage to put its expertise to good work, given the fact that we offer an extensive level of experience in designing and delivering reliable, secure and affordable high-spec solutions.

The flagship offering in our extensive lineup is represented by the Access Lite.NET/Enterprise.NET systems, capable of providing from one access control point to a multi-site network of scanners and clocks.

  6. Huawei takes up 140,000 sq ft office complex in Reading

Despite being singled out by MPs as a possible security threat to the UK’s infrastructure, telecom giant Huawei is determined to maintain and extend its presence on the local market, the company opening a huge head office in Reading.

According to a news report on the matter, Huawei unveiled its 140,000 sq ft office complex at 300 South Park Way, Green Park last week, as a part of the company’s commitment to invest £1.3bn into the UK economy over the next five years.

It comes just days after the intelligence and security committee – made up of MPs and peers – warned in a report that the government had failed to put in place adequate security procedures to protect the UK’s critical national infrastructure.

In particular, the committee warned that a 2005 deal between Huawei and BT meant the Chinese business had become “embedded in the heart of the UK’s” key infrastructure.

Quite obviously, given the rather sensitive nature of the commercial activity carried out by any company involved in this specific field, the implementation of a highly-secure access control system throughout a site of this size is certainly a must.

And this is exactly where Access Control UK can put its extensive experience to work.

One of the best solutions we offer customers requiring secure installations is the T340x fingerprint scanner, capable of easily reading the employees’ fingerprints to verify the identity of the smart card holder, providing total peace of mind.

Additionally, the biometric access control scanners are able to work quite well with most standard types of internal and external electronic, magnetic door releases and devices. Cheshire-based developer Portergate has received planning permission for a multimillion-pound development in the Friargate retail area of Preston city centre, designed to transform older shops and buildings into retail units and accommodation for the University of Central Lancashire.

According to a news release on the matter, the development will comprise 261 student bedrooms across 62 flats along with two retail units of almost 3,000 sq ft each. The overall value of the project is set at an impressive £13m, and is believed to be the largest construction project in the city.

The Preston development is scheduled to be opened for students for the 2014/15 year. Portergate chairman Anthony Jackson said: "We will play a major role in transforming the fortunes of the Friargate area and this development will encourage further investment. It’s something we know is welcomed by retailers on the street who are looking for improvements to the area.”

Quite obviously, such an extensive development, designed specifically for students, will also require the implementation of a very solid access control solution, both during the development and actual use phases.

This is exactly where Access Control UK will manage to put its expertise to good work, given the fact that we offer an extensive level of experience in designing and delivering reliable, secure and affordable high-spec solutions.

  9. £3.2m tennis development will need a reliable, yet affordable access control system

Andrew Castle, a former British No.1 tennis player and TV presenter, has announced plans to start a £3.2m project for building tennis facilities in Grantham, a news report has revealed.

The development will include an indoor tennis centre with four indoor acrylic courts, a social lounge, cafe, gym, changing facilities, treatment rooms, office and indoor and outdoor viewing areas. There will also be four artificial grass courts, four mini red hard courts and five artificial clay courts outside.

Funding for the project has come from a Grantham business and from the Lawn Tennis Association, which has provided £1m for the project in grants and loans.

Naturally, such an ambitious project, who will certainly be of public interest for tennis lovers, has to be equipped with a very solid and reliable access control solution, and this is exactly where the solutions designed by Access Control UK come into play.

Depending on specific requirements, our Access Control Systems can operate up to 31 clocking stations, each of which can have up to twelve scanner controllers attached to it – in effect, the system can control access to 372 different areas of any site. Door access can be limited by the access control software, which controls the access profile of each employee who is enrolled on the system via their fire roll call status.

Both smart card and biometric access control scanners can be combined on the same network, giving you full control over who is allowed access through any controlled point at any time of day. Sensitive or dangerous areas can easily be denied to those who do not have the appropriate security clearance.

The access control software running the system has been designed so that multiple combinations of access patterns and rules can be programmed into the system to function alongside each other, with the result that all of your employees’ movements are accurately monitored and analysed.
