  1. Car parts manufacturer to build huge facility in South Cambridgeshire

A 1 million sq ft manufacturing facility is set to be built on a 23-acre South Cambridgeshire site, creating no less than 460 jobs for the local area in the process, a news report in the local business media has revealed.

Gestamp Tallent Ltd, who manufactures various products for BMW and Bentley, has just received planning approval for the manufacturing development on Bourn Airfield in St Ives, on a site that is currently occupied by four buildings with three dating back to the Second World War and one built during the 1960s.

The existing site contains warehouse and production facilities totalling 194,967 sq ft., while the area proposed for construction is approximately 1 million sq ft and will cover 18.3 per cent of the site.

Since we’re talking about a huge industrial development, with multiple buildings serving a variety of purposes, then installing a very solid and reliable access control system at the company’s new site is really a must, and this is specifically where Access Control UK could lend a helping hand.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  2. Medical equipment manufacturer takes up huge space in Newtown Industrial Estate

Drive Medical, a multinational manufacturer and distributor of medical equipment for use in the home healthcare, surgical, medical and rehabilitation sectors, has just signed a six-year lease to move to a 71,956 sq ft space in Newtown Industrial Estate at Crosskeys, Newport.

According to a new report in the local business media, the move follows the acquisition of Blaenau Gwent-based rival Mountway.

The Crosskeys industrial estate has more than 175,000 sq ft of internal storage space with 24 loading bays spread across two buildings.

Mark Thompson, operations director of Drive Medical, said: "We import equipment from the Far East and had been using third-party warehouse facilities near our West Yorkshire headquarters. But following the Mountway acquisition we decided to lease premises in South Wales for our entire national operation."

Given the sensitive nature of the activity being carried out by Drive Medical and the very high value of the items found on the premises, installing a very solid and reliable access control system at the company’s new site is really a must, and this is specifically where Access Control UK could lend a helping hand.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  3. University of Cambridge to get new chemical engineering and biotechnology facility

Construction services company Morgan Sindall has just been awarded a £40.8m contract by the University of Cambridgeshire for the development of a new chemical engineering and biotechnology facility, a news report in the local media has revealed.

The building, designed by architects BDP, will feature biological laboratories, cleanrooms and a magnetic resonance research centre, with the estimated date of completion being set for June 2015.

The project follows the merger of the university’s Department of Chemical Engineering and the Institute of Biotechnology and will bring together teaching and research. The building will be set in the university’s science and technology campus at West Cambridge which covers 163 acres.

Bob Ensch, area director for Morgan Sindall, said: "The West Cambridge site blends academic and commercial buildings and provides the physical space that allows the university to create facilities which will compete with other leading international universities and act as a centre for collaborative research with industry."

Given the very sensitive (and potentially dangerous) nature of the activity at this future chemical engineering and biotechnology facility, the implementation of a very solid and reliable access control and visitor monitoring solution is really a must, this being specifically the area where Access Control UK could put its extensive experience to very good use.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  4. The Incuba start-up focused centre in Dunstable is now open

A 4.5m pounds business support and learning centre has just recently officially opened in Dunstable, and is set to offer support, training and development in addition to meeting rooms and offices to rent, a news report in the local business media has revealed.

The Incuba targets mostly start-ups and has been developed by Central Bedfordshire College, while also being supported by Central Bedfordshire Council.

Ali Hadawi, principal and chief executive of Central Bedfordshire College, said: "The college has always been proud to be a major contributor to the economy of the area.

"We know that training and development makes a big difference to businesses as they start up and as they grow.

"The Incuba will be committed to providing excellent training, to ensure businesses are given every chance of success."

Given the specific nature of the centre, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that it also requires the implementation of a very solid and reliable access control system, and this is exactly where Access Control UK can put its extensive experience to very good use.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  5. HMP Peterborough set for significant extension

HMP Peterborough, a privately operated category B prison, is set to undergo a significant extension process that will be carried out by international support services and construction group Interserve, who also designed and constructed the original prison back in 2005.

Work has commenced on site, with completion scheduled for December 2014 and, according to a media report, the extension process should include the building of a new four-storey 292 bed adult male house block consisting of a mix of double and single cells, together with prisoner and staff facilities within a hub, plus adjacent exercise yards. A nearby new two storey activities building will include education and training facilities for prisoners.

Furthermore, Interserve will also deliver the provision of additional amenities within the existing prison to support the increased capacity, including exercise facilities, an extension to the main prison kitchen, a new staff dining room, further administration space and modification works within the entry building.

Last, but certainly not least, it’s important to point out that a new, extended prison wall, sterile zone and fencing will create the secure perimeter, while additional external car parking and landscaping will complete the scheme.

Given the very sensitive nature of the activity at HMP Peterborough, the implementation of a very solid and reliable access control and visitor monitoring solution is really a must, this being specifically the area where Access Control UK could put its extensive experience to very good use.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  6. £40m funding pot for technological development now available for companies in the aerospace sector

The National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) has just announced a second round of bidding for aerospace suppliers, set to open in January, that will enable more companies to apply for a share of the £40m funding pot to help innovate technologies for new products or manufacturing processes over the next four years.

The programme is designed to create or retain 1,200 jobs in this supply chain, supporting the aims of the Aerospace Growth Partnership to maintain the UK’s global position in the aerospace market.

Secretary of State for Wales David Jones said: "The global aerospace market is one that is constantly evolving and is one this government is fully behind. I would encourage businesses to take advantage of this new opportunity to get the additional support they need to help the UK to maintain its world leading position in this very important sector."

Taking into account the fact that the aforementioned companies are involved in an industry sector where the security of trade secrets represents a major reason of concern, the implementation of reliable access control solutions is also a very good idea for all of the companies that will manage to gain acceess to the respective investment pot, and that’s exactly where Access Control UK can put its extensive experience to very good use.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  7. High-tech firms in Oxfordshire could generate up to £1bn in extra revenue, report claims

A new report commissioned by the University of Oxford and Science Oxford, and written by economic consultancy SQW, has revealed that Oxfordshire has the potential to generate an extra £1bn in economic output for the UK thanks to its growing cluster of high-tech businesses.

The report, entitled “The Oxfordshire Innovation Engine – realising the growth potential”, highlights the county’s outstanding strengths in specialised technology areas such as bioscience and medical, motorsport, space science and ICT and estimates that there are 1,500 high-tech firms at present, employing a total of 43,000 people.

And the study claims the county could produce an additional £1bn in gross value added – a key measure of output – over the next ten years if certain steps are taken, such as upgrading transport infrastructure, particularly the A34, expanding the University of Oxford’s activities at Begbroke and developing space in Oxford for start-ups and growing businesses.

Considering the somewhat sensitive nature of the activity they’s involved in, the implementation of reliable access control solutions is also a very good idea for all of the companies in the area, and that’s exactly where Access Control UK can put its extensive experience to very good use.

If you’d like to find out more about the range of solutions supplied by Access Control UK, both in terms of hardware (smart card readers, biometric readers, turnstiles, etc.) and software (access rights management software solutions, etc.), just contact us, we’ll be more than happy to answer any queries you might have.

  9. NFC could make access control solutions a lot faster and more user-friendly

The use of near field communications-enabled smartphones as access control credentials is becoming an increasingly hot topic for security experts around the world, with pro and con con opinions simply flying across the board.

For those not familiar with the technology, NFC provides simplified transactions, data exchange and wireless connections between two devices that are in close proximity to each other, usually by no more than a few inches.

Many smartphones currently on the market already contain embedded NFC chips that can send encrypted data a short distance to a reader. NFC technology is being added to a growing number of mobile handsets to ultimately enable mobile payments as well as many other applications.

Villanova University in the United States has found that using smartphones as badges saves time that can be better spent on other issues. Assigning the credential to the students’ phone takes less work than printing and delivering a badge and, since students are very protective of their phones, this should lead to a greatly reduced replacement rate.

If a phone is lost or broken, a new ID can be reissued to the new phone without even having the students come into the office.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies, including here RFID, to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

A 50-acre site at Gaerwen is the preferred location for building a new Science Park to serve North West Wales, Menai Science Park in Anglesey has confirmed.

As a news report in the local media has revealed, the site is currently owned by the Isle of Anglesey County Council and was one of three sites on the island shortlisted by the science park project team.

Science Park director Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "After undertaking a rigorous internal process, I am delighted that we now have a preferred site for our science park project which will play a key role in creating high value employment in North West Wales.”

"The park will play host to industry-facing and science-based research projects, either located currently within Bangor University, within the SME community and within large corporates.

"By having the latest state-of-the-art buildings and facilities, we aim to attract some of the best researchers, SMEs with potential for growth and large corporates to bring some of their R&D capacity to Wales" he concluded.

Given the somewhat sensitive nature of the activities set to be carried out on this site, the implementation of a very reliable access control solution is also a very good idea, and that’s exactly where Access Control UK can put its extensive experience to very good use.
