Construction group Balfour Beatty has managed to complete a £2.4m Winter Ward for the Basildon University Hospital in Essex for the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a news report in the local media has revealed.

The ProCure 21+ National Framework project features will provide 28 new beds and has been specifically designed in order to boost capacity for emergency patients during the winter period and also includes a nurses’ station and bathrooms.

The building was designed and manufactured in eight weeks and includes 33 modular units and it then took one further week for the modular building components to be placed on site by crane, significantly reducing the overall project programme.

Through the ProCure 21+ National Framework, Balfour Beatty has also delivered development works on the Accident and Emergency Department, Fracture Clinic and the Endoscopy Department at the hospital.

Given the specific nature of the activity being carried out within the ward, installing an advanced access control system to regulate access or integrating the new building with the hospital’s existing one is certainly a must.

  3. Enhance your company’s security with the help of a smart card-based access control system

Despite of the leaps ahead recorded over the past decades in access control technologies, the truth of the matter is that quite a lot of companies continue to use traditional physical keys to control access to their premises.

The most dangerous issue when using keys is the fact that physical keys can be easily copied at the local hardware store, making it easy for unauthorized copies to be made and used to obtain access to a locked office or storage room, without proper authorization.

Additionally, when a key is lost or stolen, it may require changing out the locks to ensure that unauthorized personnel don’t have easy access to the company’s property, which generates a monetary cost, as well as wasted time and effort to mitigate the risk.

However, if a smart-card access control system is implemented, it can be easily updated to ensure that keycard no longer has access to the facilities. In an instance where employees are given unique access codes, if a code is lost or a team member leaves the company, the system can be easily updated to remove that code. One of the greatest benefits of an access control system is the ability to not only control who has access to various sections of a company’s facilities, but also to keep access logs, so the business can monitor activity.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies in order to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

  7. US trash collection company to reward customers who recycle

An US-based provider of recycling and garbage-collection services has implemented a very innovative reward scheme, based around the use of an advanced RFID system, a news report has revealed.

Sanico, the company in question, has implemented a solution consisting of passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tags affixed to recycling canisters, a reader on each of its recyclables collection trucks, and an onboard computer that interprets read data and then forwards that information to a server.

The company collects recyclable refuse from 15,000 residences across New Jersey, and, when collecting recyclables, it separates paper from the bottles and cans, and then delivers the materials to buyers. This practice differs from the single-stream recycling model, used in many communities, by which all paper, plastic and glass are commingled during the collection process and are sold to at a single location, known as an intermediate process facility (IPF) which sorts the various materials.

The company decided that, by implementing the aforementioned system and rewarding customers for their efforts to separate their recyclable waste, they would manage to both reduce the bills for waste disposal (even by a tiny bit) and raise their profits – recycling paper is the only truly profitable part for the company.

And, sure enough, the RFID-based bins have been offered to around 5,000 of the company’s 15,000 customers, about 2,000 of whom have signed on to the RFID-based recycling program to date.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies, including here RFID, to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

  10. University of Leicester to build testing and analysis centre at the MIRA Technology Park

The University of Leicester is set to create a testing and analysis centre for the automotive, aerospace and space industries within the MIRA Technology Park at the enterprise zone site near Hinckley, a news report in the local media has revealed.

The new scheme represents a £2.5m investment, supported by the government’s Regional Growth Fund and the European Regional Development Fund, and is delivered in partnership with Polytec.

The Advanced Structural Dynamics Evaluation Centre (ASDEC) will be the university’s first off-campus, industry-facing commercial facility and will be available for use from mid-2014. It will enable the university to offer the UK’s first commercially available 3D laser structural dynamics vibration testing and analysis centre that works using three robot-mounted laser scanners which make non-contact vibration measurements of a surface, measuring anything from small components to whole vehicles.

Professor Kevin Schürer from the University of Leicester added: "We are very excited about the launch of ASDEC, and the support it will offer UK industry by advancing research and technical development.

"Our investment in ASDEC will enable companies to realise valuable time and cost savings by providing facilities – and expertise – that will allow them to conduct research and bring products to market much faster than previously possible."

Quite obviously, considering the type of activity set to be carried out on the premises, installing a very solid and reliable access control system on the site is really a must, and this is specifically where Access Control UK could lend a helping hand.
