  3. Mobile solutions to drive further the popularity of biometrics

The consumerisation of biometrics authentication and security solutions will be largely driven by the adoption of mobile solutions, market research company Goode Intelligence has predicted.

Within its new series of Market Intelligence reports, Goode Intelligence predicts that the next stages of consumer biometrics will create solutions that are more intelligent and seamless with the technology that they are being deployed to, which includes embedding fingerprint sensors within touch screens and touch pads.

Positioning the fingerprint sensor underneath, or within the touch screen enables mobile device Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to remove physical buttons. It also retains the convenient method of touching a finger on the front of a mobile device for identification.

Goode Intelligence reports that the growth in biometrics, especially in the consumer space, will be limited if services are not successfully linked to the biometric access control sensor. It believes that this can be achieved and there are positive signs that the enabling underlining infrastructure to support biometrics is being prepared for large-scale adoption.

  9. Electromagnetic locks and electric strikes market to record strong growth by 2017

The electromagnetic locks and electric strikes market will grow at CAGRs of 6.9% and 7.8% respectively by 2017, significantly outperforming the mechanical locks’ segment, a new research report from IHS has revealed.

It’s already a well known fact that access control systems are becoming increasingly popular because they provide a higher level of security while offering integration opportunities with time management and building automation systems.

This trend is contributing directly to the market growth of electric strikes and electromagnetic locks, the report from IHS forecasting that, from 2012 to 2017, global revenues for electromagnetic locks and electric strikes will grow at compound annual growth rates (CAGRs) of 6.9% and 7.8% respectively, compared to just around 4.5% for mechanical locks in the same time frame.

In terms of electric lock uptake, electromagnetic locks and electric strikes are the most common electric locking devices used in accordance with access control systems. Traditionally, electromagnetic locks have been the standard solution; however mature markets such as the United States and Western Europe have started adopting electric strikes at a stronger pace. Electric strikes are assumed to be more secure, aesthetically-pleasing, and more energy efficient than electromagnetic locks and are projected to have stronger growth from 2012 to 2017 in every region.

On the other hand, IHS expects most applications still require a mechanical lock override in the case of a power failure or system error thus access control is only limiting the growth of mechanical solutions in the medium-term, not necessarily replacing them.

The global physical access control market is set to record a 7% increase over 2013 levels, research firm IHS Technology has predicted during a recent report.

The new report suggest that this specific market segment will reach an overall $3.4 billion. Additionally, for the video market, IHS Technology forecasts 12 percent global growth this year, with fixed-dome and 180/360-degree network cameras as the fastest growing categories.

“The trends that continue to drive this growth are end-user education, marketing and technological developments,” says Blake Kozak, IHS Technology Senior Analyst. “Increased adoption of wireless locks and Web-enabled panels continue to drive the market. Additionally, there has been a renewed look at open standards and more secure credentials such as Commercial Identity Verification cards.”
