  1. IT security and physical access control set for full convergence

Physical, proximity smart card-based access control systems are to become fully integrated with IT identity management solutions in order to make both sets of systems faster and easier to use, industry experts forecast.

Convergence eliminates the need for users to remember and carry separate cards or other devices for opening doors, logging onto computers, and accessing cloud-based applications.

Furthermore, it also enables the inclusion of other high-value applications including cashless vending, time and attendance, and secure print management. There is growing demand for provisioning IT and physical access control system (PACS) credentials to a single card or smartphone, using a single set of processes. Beyond convenience, however, the convergence of credentials onto a single card or device can greatly improve security and reduce ongoing operational costs.

It also centralises identity and access management, consolidates tasks and enables organisations to quickly and effectively use strong authentication throughout their infrastructure to protect access to all key physical and IT resources.

The access control system developed by Access Control UK can operate up to 31 clocking stations, each of which can have up to twelve scanner controllers attached to it – in effect, the system can control access to 372 different areas of any given site.

Door access can be limited by the access control software, which controls the access profile of each employee who is enrolled on the system via their fire roll call status.

Both smart card and biometric access control scanners can be combined on the same network, giving you full control over who is allowed access through any controlled point at any time of day. Sensitive or dangerous areas can easily be denied to those who do not have the appropriate security clearance.

The access control system is completely bespoke and can be used to control most standard types of internal and external electro-magnetic door releases. In addition, your system can also control access control turnstiles, barriers and bollards.

  2. Strong security partnerships help Police achieves impressive savings

The strong and continued partnerships working between Police and private security firms has managed to help forces across the country reduce costs in the face of public sector budget cuts, said the the BSIA.

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) posted a detailed comment as an answer to a report published earlier this week by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC). The report praises the police forces’ response to budget cuts but still raises concerns around the impact on neighbourhood policing.

Providing support services and performing back-office functions is a key way in which private security firms help to drive efficiency, said the BSIA. Indeed, many members of the BSIA already collaborate with police forces to provide a range of services, including here extensive site security, access control and visitor monitoring solutions.

Encouraging more police forces to consider further engagement with private security firms is key to enabling police forces to meet the ongoing demands they face from budget cuts.

Chief Executive of the BSIA, James Kelly, said: “It is not about creating a privatised police force, as many opponents of partnerships working would have us believe. In contrast, this is a case of private industry taking on support functions to aid the police in delivering the Government’s programme of reform.

“The security industry already contributes significantly to assisting the police and emergency services if called upon to do so, and the BSIA will continue to engage with police forces, PCCs and Parliamentarians through its dedicated public affairs programme, to ensure that political thinking remains open to this diverse and innovative approach.”

A construction company has started working on the latest stage in the Development Securities and SWIP Property Trust’s final phase of its office-led regeneration project in London, a news report in the local media was able to reveal.

The new 167,000 sq ft 11-storey building, on the site of 12 Hammersmith Grove, includes speculative Grade A office provision, retail space and additional public realm works adjacent to Hammersmith tube station and opposite the Lyric Square in the centre of Hammersmith.

Designed by Flanagan Lawrence, 12 Hammersmith Grove was funded by SWIP Property Trust, part of Aberdeen Asset Management, and is being delivered on the site of a former car park.

Given the long-term planned use for this facility, implementing a very solid and reliable access control system across the entire site is a must, especially for those specific areas where access should be restricted.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies in order to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

A secure and reliable proximity card access control system designed to prevent unauthorized access, coupled with a high-performance CCTV surveillance system should be a must on every construction site manager’s checklist, given the fact that such locations are a prime target for thefts and vandalism.

In fact, a worrying 60% of construction sites experience vandalism on a weekly (18%) or monthly (42%) basis, costing the construction industry over £1 million per week, research published by industry experts was able to reveal.

The white paper suggests that a one-off single site theft can typically cost £50,000 in materials, plant & damage. This is because construction sites are perceived as ‘soft targets’ for arson attacks and metal thefts, with close to 209,000 acts of vandalism against business premises being recorded over the course of 2012/3.

Further data obtained from the research also suggests that, in 2012, over 1,000 metal thefts occurred each week from commercial properties in the UK, accounting for 1 in 6 of all thefts across all sectors.

  10. Security and access control solutions revenues to reach $15B globally in 2014

Revenues resulting from the sale of video surveillance equipment globally are expected to rise to $15 billion in 2014, up from $13.5 billion in 2013, the latest research from the IHS could reveal.

The market research firm pointed out that the world market for video surveillance equipment grew by almost seven percent last year and that the ongoing migration from analog to IP also accelerated, with revenues from network equipment being higher in all four major world regions analyzed (Americas, China, ASIA, and EMEA).

“IHS forecasts that the pace of transition will continue to be rapid in 2014 and 2015 before slowing slightly from 2016 onwards. In the next two years, a number of major vendors will continue focusing their efforts on their network equipment at the expense of analog,” said IHS Principal Analyst Jon Cropley.

In terms of revenues, the market for network cameras was much larger than the analog camera market in 2013. However, unit shipments of network cameras are not forecast to exceed those of analog cameras until later in the decade.
