  1. Work starts on new Educational Centre In Buckinghamshire

Building work is underway on a new multi-million pound educational centre for the University Campus Aylesbury Vale (UCAV) project, which is being funded and managed by Aylesbury Vale District Council, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

The four-storey building, which will include educational facilities and public amenities including restaurants, cafes and a new public square, is being built by construction firm Morgan Sindall and will expand the higher education offering for local residents, providing teaching space and break-out areas for students and staff.

The centre aims to stimulate further economic growth in Aylesbury and across Buckinghamshire by offering a number of courses which are specifically designed to meet the local industry’s skills requirements. Around 2,000 students are expected to attend the centre.

Considering the specific nature and the future use of the building, the implementation of a solid and reliable Access Control system on the premises is certainly a must.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies in order to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

  2. Access Control records strong growth over 2014, poised for further rise

The Access Control segment has surpassed video surveillance in terms of growth rate over the course of 2014 and it’s poised to continue this very positive trend over the next 5 years, new research by Memoori was able to reveal.

The physical security industry in the first half of 2014 has well outperformed what most stakeholders had forecast. Despite setbacks in economic fortunes in the developed world, the business has grown by 40 percent from its decline in 2009.

In the last 12 months, it has grown by 7.5 percent and we expect this to continue for the rest of the year, the research paper found.

This steady consistent growth since 2011 has been driven by a combination of factors including strong growth in IP video networking and IP access control products. Unfortunately, security is still regarded by most end users as a cost center and as such has been slightly overlooked in terms of capital investments.

Nevertheless, a gradual change in attitude is taking place, with buyers realizing that enhanced security can be a cost saver when reducing shrinkage (retail) and, that when integrated with other services, it can increase productivity in the business enterprise and therefore reduce operational costs.

This has been made possible through IP convergence and the market has been quite quick to see the opportunities and changing requirements for more converged and integrated solutions.

In order for companies to deliver such systems many have decided that it is necessary to acquire, merge or form alliances and partnerships with other suppliers. In order to maximize the opportunities of delivering on ROI, it is vital for suppliers to have specialist knowledge and experience in vertical markets.

  3. RFID-based Access Control and Tracking Systems can help Protect Students

RFID-based Access Control and Tracking Systems can help keep tabs on students’ whereabouts at all times, ensuring a superior level of security within educational environments.

One example of a successful RFID implementation comes from a Peru, IN, school, that has taken the necessary steps to implement such a program by issuing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards to its students.

According to school officials, they were receiving at least one call a week from a concerned parent communicating that their child had not gotten off at their bus stop. But according to Peru Community Schools Transportation Director Dave Frushour: “This will save everyone time and give parents peace of mind to know that we know where their child is.”

The student swipes a card when they get on or off the bus. This, in turn, allows the school district to track the student’s whereabouts, as far as what bus they are on. The ID card also has the bus number and stop stamped on it to help make sure they board the correct bus and exit at the correct stop.

Furthermore, the card reader gives school officials access to information such as who rides regularly and how many empty seats are on any particular bus. Frushour stresses that no personal information is stored on the cards or readers.

Access Control UK employs a variety of access control technologies, including here RFID, to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

  4. Carillion to provide facilities management services in public sector prisons

UK services group Carillion has been appointed preferred bidder to provide facilities management services in public sector prisons, a recent news report was able to reveal.
The contracts cover approximately 50 prisons and will be for an initial five-year period, with the potential for two subsequent one-year extensions.
Carillion will provide a wide range of hard and soft facilities management services, including mechanical and electrical engineering maintenance, building fabric maintenance, energy and environmental services, waste management, escort services for contractors, cleaning services and minor building works.
Mobilisation is scheduled to begin in 2015, while the contract is due to begin 1 June 2015. The combined revenue from these two contracts is expected to be between £35m and £40m per year.

Managing the contractors’ access to the secure prison site can be a potentially troublesome issue, but this is specifically where the Visitor Monitoring Systems and access control systems from Access Control UK could really be put through their paces.

The access control systems can operate up to 31 clocking stations, each of which can have up to twelve scanner controllers attached to it – in effect, the system can control access to 372 different areas of your site. Door access can be limited by the access control software, which controls the access profile of each employee or visitor who is enrolled on the system via their fire roll call status.

Both smart card and biometric access control scanners can be combined on the same network, giving you full control over who is allowed access through any controlled point at any time of day. Sensitive or dangerous areas can easily be denied to those who do not have the appropriate security clearance.

Your access control system is completely bespoke and can be used to control most standard types of internal and external electro-magnetic door releases. In addition, your system can also control access control turnstiles, barriers and bollards.

A new super-school that will see five different schools merge into a single, “all-through” educational establishment, is set to be built by Willmott Dixon on behalf of the Ceredigion County Council, a recent news report was able to reveal.

The "super school" will incorporate Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi, Aberbanc, Coedybryn, Llandysul, and Pontsian schools, and the work will also involve the construction of a new two storey 11,200m2 facility to accommodate 1,000 primary and secondary school pupils.

The new school, which is yet to be named, will provide facilities including a large hall, sports hall, kitchen and catering facilities and 47 classrooms including science laboratories and IT facilities. External landscaping of the surrounding area will also create four sports pitches, a full sized 2G synthetic sports pitch and onsite parking.

Councillor Ellen ap Gwynn, Leader of Ceredigion County Council, said: "This has been in the planning stages for almost a year and it’s fantastic to celebrate the first step of this journey for a new state of the art school in Llandysul. We have established a great relationship with Willmott Dixon, as we’ve worked with them in the past on the construction of the Council’s Canolfan Rheidol Offices in Aberystwyth.

"We look forward to being a part of the construction process and providing the students in Ceredigion with some of the best learning facilities in Wales."

  9. How to control site access using the contractors’ CSCS cards

Access control systems designed to fully integrate building contractors’ CSCS cards will become more widespread on the future, especially since the whole industry is set to grow 23% by the end of 2018, according to the latest Construction Products Association (CPA).

Dr Noble Francis, Economics Director of the Association, commented: "Our Forecasts reflect a welcome, recurring theme as growth continues and begins to broaden. Short-term activity is still led by private housing, infrastructure and commercial, and areas of public sector construction are showing the first signs of increasing strength. We believe the expansion will continue through 2018.”

Dr Francis continued: "The private housing sector’s rapid growth since early 2013 has been sustained by consistent levels of demand, the general UK economy’s return to health and government policies such as Help to Buy. We forecast starts to rise 18.0% in 2014 and 10.0% in 2015. In order for such projections to be met, however, increased capacity is necessary, particularly from SME house builders. In addition, there remain serious questions about affordability and higher mortgage repayment costs, together with uncertainty around the future of housing policies given the pending election. With this in mind, we forecast private housing growth will moderate in the longer term to 5.0% per year from 2016.”

Construction workers and other people who hold a CSCS card can use their existing card gain access to a construction site or similar, or use the CSCS card to gain access through turnstiles or car park barriers.

The software running on all of the access control systems developed and manufactured by Access Control UK also includes a CSCS card wizard. This allows system users to quickly grant contractors access to their clocks and access control system. The wizard will handle three different scenarios when granting access rights to contractors and for each different scenario, it will initially guide the user through the enrolment procedure.

The Contractors CSCS card is read using a USB card reader attached to a PC running the software.

Details are extracted from the card to update the contractors “employee” details within the system.

System objects such as a company, site, shift group and department, are assigned to the cardholder, either through selection or by default.

Templates for badges can be previewed by the user to see how their badge will appear, populating it with their personal details. Previewed badges can then be printed to any windows supported card printer.

  10. Enhance site security by replacing old mechanical master key systems

Individuals and organizations looking for a way to enhance the level of security at their sites or premises should seriously consider removing their older mechanical master key systems and replacing them with modern, high-end proximity smart card-based access control systems.

While using a key system is extremely easy, the truth of the matter is that, on the long-term, it can cost a lot of time and money. For example, should one employee lose his assigned set of keys, the company would have to replace all locks on the site, at a considerable cost.

Furthermore, each key can represent a security vulnerability in itself – a copied key can be used to access the site at any time, particularly at night and during weekends.

The best solution to tackle this issue is the implementation of a secure and affordable access control and restriction system, and this is specifically where Access Control UK could put its extensive experience in the field to very good use.

We employ a variety of access control technologies in order to create advanced solutions, enable users to exert solid, reliable and accurate control over the access to specific premises or zones.

The access control systems supplied by Access Control UK also support an effective Fire Roll Call feature, which will enable employers to evacuate the personnel off the premises in a very orderly and clear manner, should a fire, explosion or some other type of catastrophe occur.
