  1. Security Access Control Systems are Mission-Critical for Majority of Businesses

In the increasingly dangerous and unpredictable world we live in, security access control systems have become mission critical for most businesses wanting to enjoy a hassle free business activity.

Companies can create this type of security in variety of ways. Gone are the days when company would recruit a person to stand at the gateway to keep watch on the entrance activity. With the innovation of advanced security access control, it is no longer a headache for the businesses since most effective access control systems are computer operated.

The access control systems are must for the business in order to permit or restrict entrance to a property. They can be fined-tuned to access to specific locations on a property, at specific times. The system gives owner peace of mind providing complete control over all areas of the residential or commercial building or compound. The latest systems are more convenient and effective than those traditional access keys, for the keys can be stolen, lost or duplicated easily.

  2. Use of mobile devices for access control to grow significantly by 2020, Gartner report suggests

The use of mobile devices for access control is likely to grow significantly over the next few years, with 20 per cent of organizations using smartphones instead of physical access control cards by 2020, a recent research report from Gartner has predicted.

In 2016, less than five per cent organisations used smartphones to enable access to offices and other premises. “Today, the increasing availability of mobile and Cloud technologies from many physical access control system (PACS) vendors will have major impact on how these systems can be implemented and managed,” said David Anthony Mahdi, Research Director at Gartner.

PACS technology is widely deployed across multiple vertical industries and geographies to secure access to a wide range of facilities and ensuring that only entitled people get access to specific locations. Smartphones using technologies and protocols such as Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, and Near Field Communication can work with a number of readers and PACS technology.

“Replacing traditional physical access cards with smartphones enables widely sought after cost reductions and user experience benefits,” added Mahdi.

  3. Gym chain deploys iris recognition-based access control system

A gym chain in Iceland has decided to deploy an advanced iris recognition access control system across its facilities in order to better manage and streamline the access of their 40,000 members, a news report has been able to suggest.

Iris recognition is an authentication process in which the random iris patterns of a person are analyzed. These patterns are captured using digital cameras and illumination by near infrared technique. Iris biometric recognition has several advantages such as high accuracy and time performance of the technology.

In a statement announcing the deployment, World Class Iceland managing director Bjorn Leifsson said the system “has worked perfectly,” adding that fewer staff are needed to monitor facility entrances, while the gyms now offer “a higher degree of security and have happier customers.” The same technology will be introduced in new World Class Iceland facilities as they open.

  4. Security Industry Association adopts OSDP security standard for access control communication

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has adopted the OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) standard for access control communication and as a replacement for the ageing Wiegand protocol, the organization has been able to suggest.

The OSDP standard allows security equipment, such as card and biometric readers from one company interface easily with control panels and equipment from another manufacturer. In other words, OSDP fosters interoperability among security devices. It also adds sophistication and security benefits through features such as bi-directional communication and read/write capabilities.

A two-way channel paves the way for forward-looking security applications such as the handling of advanced smartcard technology, PKI, and mobile device access. Not only does it provide a concise set of commonly used commands and responses, it eliminates guesswork, since encryption and authentication is predefined. How will that impact security equipment manufacturers, integrators and users?

OSDP helps ensure that numerous manufacturers’ products will work with each other. Interoperability can be achieved regardless of system architecture. For instance, the specification can handle smartcards by constantly monitoring wiring to protect against attack threats and serves as a solution for high-end encryption such as required in federal applications. The specification for handling LEDs, text, buzzers and other feedback mechanisms provides a rich, user-centric access control environment.

Biometric access control systems using iris recognition technology are likely to record a significant growth until 2021, with rising demand for authentication and extensive support from governments listed as major factors fuelling the growth, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

Iris recognition is an authentication process in which the random iris patterns of a person are analyzed. These patterns are captured using digital cameras and illumination by near infrared technique.

Iris biometric recognition has several advantages such as high accuracy and time performance of the technology. Several countries across the globe have deployed iris biometric systems for automated cross border activities and creating national IDs for the people. This has reduced the time for verification of the person travelling from one place to another across the globe.

The national security agencies are using iris scanning technology to verify the identity of the people immigrating into their countries. Further, with advancement in technology and rising demand for security, this technology is expected to be used for big residential buildings over the coming years. However, the technology is intrusive and very expensive.

The rising demand for authentication and extensive support from the government are major factors fuelling the growth of iris biometrics market. Additionally, the rising demand for E-passport, criminal identification and surveillance in public gatherings are other factors that add to the growth of the market.

Further, the use of biometric recognition in E-commerce and setting up of a hosted security system on cloud are expected to attract new and existing players towards growing trend in security and authentication. Additionally, the players in this market are expected to deploy multimodal biometric recognition systems to integrate their existing systems with iris biometric system.

However, high cost and fear of privacy disturbance are the major concerns that could pose challenge to the growth of the market. Other factors affecting the growth of the market are the technical issues regarding the compatibility with existing systems and time to develop the iris recognition system.

Smart card access control systems are likely to become the solutions of choice for enforcing a higher level of security across university campuses worldwide, security experts believe.

A recent survey found that while the majority of college campuses use magnetic stripe cards and more than half still use keys for access, 9 percent of universities across the US have turned to smart cards.

With the latest in technology, universities are seeing huge updates in their security and efficiency. This is especially valid since with smart cards also come smart locks, which recognize the credential on the card and whether or not that person has permission to access that door at that time.

  8. Fingerprint Identification Systems to Record Solid Growth in the Healthcare Market by 2023

Fingerprint identification systems are likely to record a strong level of growth between now and 2023, a recent market research report from Transparency Market Research has been able to reveal.

Fingerprint identification is a method of personal identification using the ridge patterns found on the fingertips and is currently employed in various sectors owing to its infallible means of personal identification. Fingerprint identification is accomplished by either automated methods or non-automated methods for authentication. The modern approach for use of this technology involves use of fingerprint readers working on optical, thermal, silicon or ultrasonic principles.

Such readers consist of fingerprint sensors and algorithms. Fingerprint sensors capture a digital image of the fingerprint pattern and digitally process this scan to produce a biometric template which is stored and used for future matching and identification. The stored algorithms compare previously stored database of fingerprints against fingerprints of the candidate for authentication.

The use of fingerprint identification in healthcare eliminates the risk of duplicate insurance claims or test request by discriminating between same identities with different names. The technique verifies user’s identity before initiating a particular transaction and thus also eliminates the need for pin or passwords.

Fingerprint identification technology has major applications in physical and logical access control, time and attendance and document encryption purposes.

A Texas school district has revealed plans to carry out a massive $12m access control upgrade across its 23 campuses, a news report has been able to suggest.

Board members with the Pearland Independent School District issued a bond proposal recently that would give each school a secure front entrance featuring bullet resistant glass, among other security measures.

The renovations would put security vestibules at every school that would be locked and controlled by each front office. Visitors could be buzzed into the main campus after they’ve been vetted by office staff members.

All of the entry and exit doors at the schools would also have automatic locks installed to simplify the lockdown process. Designated school staff members would also receive alerts if doors are left ajar.

Additionally security upgrades include improved video surveillance systems at each school and better playground security.
