A modern, secure and reliable access control system is a must have for any new hospital or healthcare facility, such as the New Papworth Hospital that’s set to be built in Cambridge.
Construction company Skanska has been selected as principal contractor for the new world-class healthcare facility, which is set to feature 300 hospital beds, seven operating theatres and five catheterisation labs.
Skanska have said that they will use the latest business information modelling (BIM) technology in the design phase to maximise energy efficiency and ensure the hospital offers long-term flexibility. And will use construction techniques to allow reconfiguration of the hospital over time, making it fit for purpose both on delivery and for the future. The technology is also being used to engage clinicians in the construction process.
Skanska will also collaborate with the Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to develop a green travel plan for site, which will aim to reduce reliance on car travel and encourage the use of public transport. Secure cycle racks, changing facilities and showers will be provided for employees.
The public-private partnership contract includes design, build, finance and hard and soft facilities management, with construction to begin immediately and completion due in 2018.
The construction contract is worth around £140 million. Hard facilities management services at the hospital will also be provided by Skanska for a 30-year post-completion period.
Considering the specific nature and the future use of the building, the implementation of a solid and reliable Access Control system on the premises is certainly a must.
